Autumn Series of Spiritual and Personal Enrichment Thursdays Planned Our Spiritual and Personal Enrichment Thursday series is designed to focus on spiritual development and growth, as well as offering opportunities for learning new skills and socializing. The series includes workshops, seminars, book discussions, and special events.

Following are the events planned for Autumn: : September 2 First Light Seminar: Jesus and the Kingdom of God, part 4---First Light is a 12-session DVD- and web-based study of the historical Jesus and the kingdom of God. It is narrated by renowned New Testament scholars, Marcus Borg and John Dominic Corssan, and shot on location in Jerusalem and throughout Galilee. (This seminar continues through November 4.) Writing Down Your Soul Workshop, part 4--Spiritual journeys are about deepening and embracing that spark within us that some call the soul. This workshop will give you the tools to communicate, romance, and trust that the God within (your soul) knows and will explain what is best for you and your life. Learning to Cook Class: Exotic Quick Breads--Learn how to bake sweet breads with Joseph McChesney, of Breadwinners Bakery. CANCELLED September 9 First Light: Jesus and the Kingdom of God, part 5 (See September 2 above.) Learning to Cook Class: Quick Winter Soups--Winter is just a few months away and what would be better on your menu than nourishing, warming soups? KOP MCC member, Milly Taylor, will show you what you ingredients you need to make them and how to do it and you can eat your creations. There is a $10 materials fee that will be collected at sign-up. What Are My Spiritual Gifts?--Each of us is endowed with gifts that can help us in our personal or spiritual journey, as well as be used to help others. In this workshop, led by Associate Pastor Rev. Lorraine Brock, you'll have the opportunity to assess and explore these gifts and see how you can best use them. September 16 First Light: Jesus and the Kingdom of God, part 6 (See September 2 above.) What Legal Papers Do I Need?---Don't wait until it's too late! Find out what legal documents you will need to enable critical care decisions to be made on your behalf or for partners and loved ones. Examples of medical directives, health care surrogacy, and living wills will be shared. This workshop, led by Doug Harrell, Bayfront Hospital Chaplain, is essential for GLBT singles and couples.
September 23 First Light: Jesus and the Kingdom of God, part 7 (See September 2 above.) September 30 First Light: Jesus and the Kingdom of God, part 8 (See September 2 above.) American Stage Theatre Party--Buy your own ticket(s) for The Mystery of Irma Vep--a hilarious campy Gothic spoof that satirizes everything from Hitchcock's "Rebecca" to Victorian melodrame to the classic movie, "The Mummy's Curse"--and meet as a group. You may want to get your friends together for an early dinner before the show. For tickets call 727-823-7529 or click here October 7 No events planned October 14 First Light: Jesus and the Kingdom of God, part 9 (See September 2 above.) Acupuncture and Herbs--Dr. April Wang, a local practioner, will lead this workshop and introduce and discuss these ancient Chinese healing techniques, whose use in western medicine is becoming more mainstream. October 21 & 28 First Light: Jesus and the Kingdom of God, parts 10 & 11(See September 2 above.) Grief Recovery Workshop, parts 1 & 2--Whether from the loss of a loved one, a cherished pet, or even a job, the process of grieving is very similar. Learn how to cope with the stages of grief and get on the road to recovery. These workshops are led by Associate Pastor Rev. Lorraine Brock, who received her certificate of specialization as a Grief Recovery Specialist from the Grief Recovery Institute in 2002. November 4 First Light: Jesus and the Kingdom of God, part 12 (See September 2 above.) Trivial Pursuit Night--Teams will battle it out at this special night of fun with fascinating tidbits and facts. Rev. Lorraine Brock will referee. November 11 & 18 No events planned November 25 Thanksgiving Day Worship Service at 10:00 am December 2 & 9 Homosexuality and the Bible, parts 1 & 2--Many GLBT people are either afraid of the Bible or unfamiliar with its content, thinking that it has only bad news for them. Yet consensus is growing among respected Scripture scholars that the Bible does not condemn GLBT relationships. This two-part seminar, led by Senior Pastor Candace R. Shultis, will discuss a proactive reading of the Bible that offers new life for GLBT individuals, their families, and their friends. Advent Preparation, parts 1 & 2--The four weeks of Advent leading up to Christmas, and the birth of Christ, offer unique opportunities for spiritual prayer and practice. This two-part workshop, led by Associate Pastor Lorraine Brock, will offer guidance. December 16 Christmas Carols and Cookies--Join in this annual Christmas season celebration of carols--traditional and contemporary--as well as readings from sacred and secular texts. Bring a dozen or so cookies to share in the festive fellowship following the sing-a-long. KOP MCC Teams Forming for Two Upcoming Charity Walks AIDS Walk St. Pete Saturday, September 11, 10:00 am, North Shore Park, St. Petersburg Last year's was rained out, but still managed to raise $80K. The fundraising goal this sixth year of the AIDS Walk is $100K and you can help reach the target by walking, getting sponsors for your walk, or sponsoring a KOP team member. On-line registration has been set up. So, if you'd like to put your feet where your mouth is and help raise money for HIV/AIDS programs, then you can register for Team KOP MCC by clicking here. Once registered you can download a donor sheet to get friends to sponsor your walk or direct them to the website. And remember, if you aren't able to walk on September 11, you still can help by finding a team member on the website to support with your donation. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Saturday, October 23, 9:00 am, North Straub Park, St. Petersburg A KOP MCC team is forming for this annual event that raises money for American Cancer Society's research and programs for breast cancer patients. If you are interested in walking or wish to sponsor a team walker, please click here. Autumn Gay Bingo Planned Saturday, October 23, 7:00 pm, social hall Mark your calendar for this quarterly event that raises money for local HIV/AIDS organizations. Gay Bingo is more than just a series of number-calling bingo games. Gay Bingo is hosted by a drag queen and features the BVD's (Bingo Verifying Divas), and a retinue of drag kings and queens working the crowd from the floor. Each Gay Bingo features a theme to dress for (October's is Halloweenie), surprise entertainment, a 50/50 raffle and, of course, eight fun bingo games. But this is not your Granny's ordinary bingo, so come early to get a seat and be prepared for some campy nonsense. Admission is $20 (cash only) and proceeds benefit Francis House. Concession proceeds benefit KOP MCC, so come hungry and eat a weenie or two for the cause! A Night of Black & White Planned for November Mark your calendar for Saturday, November 6--A Night of Black & White-- when we will be celebrating a night of food, fun, and fellowship. This fund raising event begins at 6:30 pm and will offer something for everyone: silent and live auctions, raffles, costume contest, entertainment, spaghetti dinner, and cash bar. Come in black and white attire: be creative. Admission is only $5. All proceeds benefit Suncoast Center, Inc. and King of Peace MCC. For more information, call 727-323-5857.
